To be eligible for our program, you will need to have a master’s in mental health field like social work or mental health counseling, or a doctorate in psychology or other mental health profession. In addition, we usually require at least two years of post-degree clinical experience. If you are not fully licensed, you can accrue hours towards your license through ICP’s adult treatment clinic. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Graduate degree in either psychology, social work, counseling, pastoral counseling, medicine, psychiatric nursing, or other mental health profession
• License or Limited Permit in New York State

Readiness for Training:
The applicant’s previous training and experience will be assessed as part of the admissions process. Because trauma work is demanding and involves many new concepts, basic therapeutic skills for working with adults should already be in place. Applicants should have some familiarity with psychodynamic concepts such as transference and countertransference.

Please note that participation in the program requires you to be engaged in ongoing individual therapy. This program can bring up significant personal experiences and emotions, so having consistent therapeutic support is an important part of ensuring your wellbeing throughout the process. You may continue working with your current therapist or choose to establish care with a new one before the program begins. The goal is to ensure continuity of care and ongoing support for the duration of the program.

• Tuition for the 2026-2027 academic year is $3,650.
• Tuition and any program-related fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.
• The tuition covers coursework and group supervision. Candidates are responsible for individual supervision fees.
• Please note that expenses for training directly related to one’s profession may be considered a tax-deductible expense.
• If you do not currently have malpractice insurance, you will need to obtain a policy.
• All candidates, therapists, and supervisors must list ICP as a certificate holder on their malpractice insurance policy. This can be easily done by contacting your malpractice insurance provider and should not affect the cost of your policy (~$10 - $25/year).

At the completion of our program, you will have received:

• A thorough grounding in the neurobiological principles that underlie psychological trauma
• An integrative understanding of trauma theory and attachment theory as they relate to trauma, dissociation, and developmental trauma
• Instruction in how to apply trauma theory phase-oriented treatment, and clinical interventions to use in your clinical practice
• Intensive training in techniques to address symptoms of posttraumatic stress, including hyper- and hypo-arousal, using the most effective interventions focused on regulation and stabilization like hypnosis, schemas, mindfulness, polyvagal theory, attachment lens, shame, dissociation, etc.
• Introduction to what we have found to be effective modalities for processing trauma symptoms and memory reconsolidation: Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS)
• A unique clinical experience of providing at least 120 hours of trauma-focused therapy to ICP clinic patients
• At least 60 hours per year of individual supervision with seasoned trauma-trained supervisors

Scholarships and tuition assistance are available to candidates who might qualify. We are proud to offer the Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark Equity Scholarship, which awards one scholarship of two full years of tuition to a trauma therapist who is Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color.

Candidates complete 30 hours of individual supervision per academic year, scheduled at a mutually agreed-upon time and held either virtually or in person. Supervisors are selected from Training Program faculty with advanced expertise in trauma treatment and the clinical modalities taught in the curriculum.

Supervision provides in-depth consultation on ICP clinic cases and supports candidates in refining case formulation, developing treatment plans, working with transference and countertransference, and integrating trauma-focused interventions into clinical practice.

Clinical and Supervision Requirements

By the End of Year One (prior to Year Two):

• 60 patient contact hours

• 30 supervision hours

By Graduation (typically October or November):

• 120 patient contact hours

• 60 supervision hours

To apply to the Trauma Training Program, we require the following:

• Current Resume
• Copy of Professional License
  • If you do not yet have a license, please include a notice from the ASWB confirming your status
• If you do not currently have malpractice insurance, you will need to obtain a policy.
• Two Letters of Recommendation
  • Letters of recommendation should be sent directly by your references to Trauma@icpnyc.org. 
    • Please do not have your recommender send the letter to you and then forward it to us. Your recommender must send the letter to us directly.
  • While we expect to receive these letters, we would appreciate a heads-up regarding who will be sending them. Please provide the full name and/or email address of each recommender when you submit your application.
  • To avoid timing issues, we strongly encourage you to communicate with your recommenders and ask them to submit their letters around the same time you submit your application.

The application deadline for the 2026/2027 academic year is Tue, June 30, 2026.

Enrollment season started on February 23, 2026 the same day as our first Information Session. Additional sessions will take place throughout March, April, and May.

• In-Person Track: Group Case Consultation, Wednesdays, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM at ICP
• Virtual Track: Group Case Consultation, Wednesday evenings via Zoom (time TBA)
