SCHOLARSHIPS AND TUITION ASSISTANCE

ICP is proud to offer Equity Scholarships and Global Voices Scholarships to support the education and professional development of individuals whose backgrounds, experiences, or professional commitments align with ICP’s values of equity, inclusion, and access, including a strong commitment to addressing racial disparities and language barriers in mental health care.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access (IDEA) are integral to ICP’s mission. In addition to scholarship opportunities, ICP also offers tuition assistance for individuals who demonstrate financial need. Applicants may apply for both scholarship opportunities and tuition assistance, if eligible.

Scholarships

In accordance with ICP’s values to increase equity, inclusion, and financial accessibility, we are proud to offer full-tuition Equity Scholarships in five of our training programs. ICP has established scholarships in these programs that are named in honor of current and past psychoanalysts, psychologists, educators, and leaders whose work has had a meaningful impact on the healthcare and mental health fields. ICP anticipates that these scholarships will continue to be awarded over many years to come. These scholarships are intended to support applicants whose lived experience, personal background, and/or professional work and goals reflect a meaningful commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in mental health care, including addressing racial disparities and expanding access to care and training for underserved populations.

APPLICATION CRITERIA*

Applicants should demonstrate, through lived experience, background, and/or professional work, a meaningful commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in mental health care, including efforts to address racial disparities
Hold a graduate degree in a licensable mental health field, along with a NYS license or the ability to apply for a limited permit
Provide a current resume or CV
Provide two letters of recommendation that speak to the applicant’s qualifications, character, and commitment to this field of study
Provide a personal statement that includes a description of the applicant’s commitment to pursuing this field of study, future career goals for utilizing the knowledge and skills gained in the program, the applicant’s commitment to equity in mental health care, and how scholarship support would impact the ability to pursue this training

Joycelyn Elders Honorary Scholarship

Division: Sex Therapy Program (STP)

ICP is committed to the education and training of future sexuality practitioners, and awards a yearly scholarship to support equity and broaden access within our Sex Therapy Program and the field of sex therapy. This scholarship is named for Dr. Joycelyn Elders who, in 1993, became the first woman and the first Black U.S. Surgeon General. Dr. Elders used her national platform to tirelessly promote sex education.

This scholarship is intended to support a recipient whose lived experience and/or personal background contribute to greater diversity within the fields of mental health and sexuality. lived experience and/or personal background contribute to greater diversity, equity, and inclusion within the fields of mental health and sexuality.

Please note that our Sex Therapy certificate program is a two-year program. The scholarship is intended to cover tuition for the full course of study, provided that the recipient remains in good standing and in compliance with program and institute policies.

E. Kitch Childs Scholarship

Division: Family and Couples Treatment and Training Service (FACTS)

The scholarship in honor of E. Kitch Childs, a prominent clinical psychologist, feminist, and lesbian activist, expresses our commitment to the education and training of future couples and family therapists whose work reflects ICP’s values of equity, inclusion, and access. It is awarded yearly to support and strengthen access within the Family and Couples division of ICP and is intended as a contribution to the overall field of couples and family therapy.

Dr. Kitch Childs was part of the group that, in 1969, founded the Association for Women in Psychology and in 1972 was one of the first Black women to earn a doctorate from the University of Chicago. She was a staunch advocate for the protection and support of minority women, battered women, people with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, and other disenfranchised persons.

This scholarship is intended to support a recipient whose lived experience and/or personal background contribute to greater diversity within the field of mental health and whose goals reflect a meaningful commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in mental health care, including addressing racial disparities and improving access to services for underserved and historically marginalized communities.

Please note that our Family and Couples Treatment Services certificate program is a two-year program. The scholarship covers two years of tuition, and the expectation is that scholars in good standing will complete the full program.

Dr. Margaret Lawrence Scholarship

Division: Psychoanalytic Training Program

In honor of Dr. Margaret Lawrence, this scholarship provides full tuition and supervision for the full four years of this program for scholars in good standing. This deeply enriching program leads to a certificate to practice as a psychoanalyst, or to eligibility for NYS certification as a licensed psychoanalyst.

This scholarship reflects ICP’s commitment to increasing access to psychoanalytic training and to supporting applicants whose lived experience and/or professional work and goals are aligned with equity in mental health care, including addressing racial disparities and expanding access to psychoanalytic treatment in underserved populations.

Dr. Annie Lee Jones Scholarship

Division: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program

This scholarship is named for Annie Lee Jones, PhD, an African-American psychoanalyst who has been involved in bringing this work to underserved communities. She was one of the early African-American psychoanalytic candidates at NYU's Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis, worked in the NY Harbor Department of Veterans Affairs Community Living Center, and was among the founders of Black Analysts Speak, an important series of discussions among Black analysts that were presented in public.

Dr. Jones is the author of several papers on the operation of conceptual metaphors within psychoanalysis and on issues related to racial oppression, masculinity, group dynamics, and the use of video to home telehealth technology for individual psychotherapy.

This scholarship supports applicants whose lived experience and/or professional work and goals reflect a meaningful commitment to equity in mental health care, including addressing racial disparities and increasing access to psychodynamic treatment for underserved populations.

Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark Scholarship

Division: Trauma Studies Center

ICP is committed to investing in the future of the field of trauma therapy, and this scholarship reflects that commitment by supporting applicants whose backgrounds, experiences, and professional goals align with equity and access in mental health care. Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark were a married team whose work contributed to the ruling of the Supreme Court in Brown vs Board of Education.

This scholarship provides tuition for the full two years of this program for a scholar in good standing for a recipient whose lived experience and/or professional work and goals reflect a meaningful commitment to equity in mental health care, including addressing racial disparities and increasing access to trauma-informed services for underserved communities.

Global Voices Scholarship

At ICP, we recognize that language and culture are fundamental to healing. The Global Voices Scholarship is designed to support bilingual and multilingual clinicians who are committed to serving NYC’s diverse, non-English speaking, and marginalized communities.

Two recipients will be selected each year, one in the Family and Couples Treatment Service (FACTS) and one in the Trauma Studies Center.

Scholarship Award

The Global Voices Scholarship provides $1,750 per year for two years ($3,500 total), contingent upon recipients remaining in good standing within their training program.

Scholars in good standing are expected to:

Comply with all training program requirements for class attendance, patient hours, supervision, and therapy hours
Comply with all ICP policies and procedures, including timely patient documentation
Receive favorable evaluations/performance reviews

Scholars who do not meet these expectations may lose scholarship funding for the following academic year and/or may be subject to removal from the training program.

Application Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

Proficiency in a language other than English, with preference given to NYC’s designated citywide languages: Spanish, Chinese (including Mandarin and Cantonese), Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, and Polish, as well as other languages spoken by marginalized NYC communities
Current licensure, or eligibility for a licensure track, as a mental health professional in New York State
Limited access to financial support for advanced training
A commitment to working with underserved, multicultural, and/or non-English speaking communities
An understanding of cultural factors that impact mental health in communities where English is not the primary language
A meaningful connection to underserved or marginalized populations

Tuition Assistance

In addition to Equity Scholarships, ICP offers tuition assistance for applicants with demonstrated financial need. Tuition assistance is intended to help reduce financial barriers for qualified applicants seeking advanced clinical training.
