Sex is a central part of the human experience, yet it remains one of the most elusive topics in psychotherapy. This workshop explores why talking about sex is not just important, but often essential to deep, effective therapeutic work. When approached thoughtfully, discussions about sexuality can strengthen the therapeutic alliance, reinforce boundaries, and invite access to core aspects of a patient's inner world, including identity, intimacy, shame, desire, and relational dynamics.

We will examine how conversations about sex can help move therapy forward when patients are stuck, evasive, or when deeper psychological material is trying to emerge. The workshop will also offer practical guidance on how to initiate and navigate these conversations—whether during an initial evaluation or as part of ongoing psychotherapy.

Through detailed clinical case discussions and open dialogue, participants will learn to recognize opportunities to bring sexuality into the room in ways that are clinically meaningful and ethically sound. Questions, discussion, and reflection on participants’ own clinical experiences will be welcomed throughout the presentation.

About the Presenter: 

Kathryn S.K. Hall, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with over four decades of experience in sex therapy and research. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and has since become a leading voice in the field of sex therapy.

Dr. Hall has lectured and written extensively on topics related to sexual health, psychotherapy, and the cultural influences on sexual well-being. Her latest book, Talking About Sex in Psychotherapy, is set for release by the American Psychological Association Press in November 2025. She also maintains an active private practice specializing in the treatment of sexual concerns and sits on the Special Classification Review Board, a panel of experts appointed by the Governor of New Jersey responsible for overseeing treatment progress and determining parole readiness for incarcerated sex offenders.

She is passionate about mentorship, and she provides training in sex therapy for both emerging and experienced clinicians. Dr. Hall also serves as the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and is a Past President of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research.
