How can psychoanalytic clinicians engage the generative potentials of eroticism while navigating the intensity, ambiguity, and anxiety that accompany such experiences? In this presentation, Dr. Schoen explores how erotic material can carry both defensive and progressive meanings, with the aim of expanding clinicians’ capacities to invite, tolerate, and think about erotic dynamics in the analytic relationship. Drawing on contemporary relational and developmental perspectives, Dr. Schoen will present a detailed clinical account illustrating sexuality’s dense entanglement with basic issues of vitality and coming alive. Developmental trauma, sexual charge, disintegrative anxieties, core fantasies of transformation, and concretized longings for physical touch permeate eroticism in the space of breakdown.Highlighting how both patient and analyst regulate anxiety by avoiding these unstable intersections, Dr. Schoen proposes that it is through delving into these overlaps that the central issues of being and becoming can emerge.

Sarah Schoen, Ph.D., is Faculty, Supervising, and Training Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute, Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychology at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis, and Invited Faculty at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is Executive Editor at Psychoanalytic Dialogues, on the editorial board of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, and co-editor of Patriarchy and its Discontents: Psychoanalytic Perspectives (2023). She is in private practice in Manhattan’s Flatiron District.
