The convergence of the candidate's personal analysis, concentrated supervision, active caseload, study of a wide variety of theories of treatment, and the freedom to share experiences with a dedicated group of professionals results in a profound life experience for the candidate. This frees him/her to deal with a wide variety of emotional problems, and in a wide spectrum of depths of analysis. The clinical services of the Institute provide psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy for a population of over 500 patients per week. Our candidates in training have a ready and varied population from which to gain experience in treatment. This availability makes for a variety of treatment experiences which are not possible at other institutes that do not have active clinics.
OPEN HOUSE & CLINICAL PRESENTATIONS Saturday, March 29th 2008 RSVP to Liliana Manca 212-333-3444 or lmanca.training@icpnyc.org Eligibility:
In addition, two years of post-graduate, supervised clinical experience, including psychotherapy experience, is required of all applicants. Note: In the case of certain exceptional individuals, some of the formal requirements may by waived. Certificate of Training: A certificate of completion of the training program will be awarded in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Board of Regents of the State of New York. A candidate graduates upon the successful completion of the following: A. Curriculum: The curriculum consists of a four-year course of study with three 10-week trimesters in each year.(See Below for Specifics) Classes meet every Wednesday from 12:00 pm - 5:45 pm. The primary focus of the course work is to integrate theoretical issues with actual psychotherapy and psychoanalytic practice, and each theoretical course is paired with a complimentary case seminar. Two kinds of seminars are offered. In the theoretical aspect of the program, a heavy emphasis is placed on a thorough knowledge of psychoanalytic theories and developmental theories of emotional problems and disorders. On the practicum level, continuous case seminars and courses that deal with interview techniques, dream interpretation, and analysis of transference, provide the opportunity to develop understanding of the psychoanalytic and psychotherapy situation, and to refine one's technical skills. B. Caseload: Required treatment experience will be obtained by working with ICP clinic patients. Our large and active clinic provides the variety of patients necessary for adequate training, and our Institute's 26 offices provide the comfortable and relaxed setting in which to see those patients. At least half of the patients in a candidate's case load are usually seen more than one time per week. Patients will be chosen with the object of providing a variety of experiences to the candidate, and to reflect the cross section of pathology usually seen in a private practice. Patients can be seen in the candidate's private office or at the Institute. A minimum of 1200 hours of ICP patients are required for graduation. In the FIRST year of training, 6 ICP clinic hours will be assigned. In the late Spring of this year, or by the following Fall, a 3x/week psychoanalytic patient will be assigned. C. Personal Analysis: The candidate is required to be in 3x/week analysis for at least 240 hours. The remaining time in the program should be no less than 2x/week, commensurate with the intensity of the training experience. D. Supervision: During the FIRST year, each candidate will see one supervisor, 2x/week for supervision of psychotherapy cases. When the candidate is given their first analytic case (at the end of the first year, or beginning of the second), they will then be supervised for 1 hour per week on psychotherapy cases, and 1 hour per week on the analytic case. Satisfactory Progress: Maintenance of matriculation as well as readiness to graduate will be determined by periodic evaluation by the Training Committee. The rare Candidate who may consistently fail to demonstrate satisfactory progress may, after careful consideration, be asked to take a leave of absence or be suspended from the program. As our object is to train and graduate candidates, and as we believe in the ability to change, there is a continued open dialogue between candidates, their supervisors, and the Training Committee concerning strengths and areas needing improvement. All supervisory reports are open to the candidates' inspection, as are all discussions of their progress in the Training Committee meetings. Tuition and Expenses: Tuition is $2,200 per year paid to ICP. The fee for supervision is $40 per 45 minute session. The fee is paid directly to the supervisor. Stipend: Candidates will be paid $6 per session for the first 200 hours, $7 per session for the next 200 hours, $8 per session for the next 300 hours, $9 per session for the next 300 hours and $10 per session for the last 200 hours of the 1200 hours which are required for graduation. Applicants Must Submit the Following:
